Its appearance is based off of a shield, an item used for protection. A machine with good defense and health often prevails over the others. Defense is good for withstanding high amounts of damage. Defense This one raises a machine's defense.This power-up is handy on stronger machines like the Shadow Star, or the Swerve Star for quick winning in a melee. ![]() Offense is important for disabling other machines faster and causing greater damage. Offense This Patch raises a machine's offense.There are 10 different Permenant Power up patches. When you run into one of these, you lose 1 point of a random stat. In a certain City Trial event, some of the patches are misshapen and or colored incorrectly. There are three types besides ability patches, one type stays on Kirby's machine for the entirety of the trial, a type that either maximizes or minimizes the machine's stats for a short moment, and the last gives Kirby a makeshift power, such as giving him a powerful cannon or letting him chuck giant spike balls known as Gordos. If a patch is gray, it will downgrade Kirby's machine. They only appear in Blue Boxes, along with food shaped recovery items, But there are Red Boxes that can hold copy ability "patches", or parts of a Legendary Air Ride Machine, and Green boxes that can hold specific types of weapons and temporary power ups. Their general purpose is to upgrade Kirby's Air Ride Machine to heighten the player's chances of winning the Stadium Event that is played after the main City Trial. They come in different colors and appearances that indicate what Stat they will power up. Only 4 of the 120 City Trial tasks are to be completed in Free Run mode.Patches (or Power Ups) are special items that appear in City Trial mode in Kirby Air Ride. There is a requirement in the Checklist for clocking a certain length of time in a free run event, but this does not require the player to be moving or on a machine. All of the machines the player has unlocked can be found in the underground room beneath the city, near the starting area. ![]() During this mode, the timer increases instead of decreasing, and no boxes, items, or events will appear. After selecting a machine and going into the city, the player can freely roam the city. When Free Run is selected from the menu, a choice of all the vehicles (including the legendary machines, King Dedede and Meta Knight if they have been unlocked) will appear for the player.
